Habibah's Blog #2: How Lifelites Technology Helped Me Succeed in my GSCE exams and Follow my Baking Dreams

Habibah is a Lifelites technology user at Alexander Devine’s Children Hospice and blogs about how Lifelites supports her in her daily life. From GCSE exams to baking dreams, discover how our assistive technology has empowered her to overcome barriers, gain independence, and inspire others. Thanks to tools like the Switch and Eyegaze technology, she hasn’t only achieved exam success but also found new ways to connect, create, and look forward to a bright, fulfilling future.

Sitting My GCSE Exams with Support from Lifelites

This summer, I sat my GCSE exams. I was very fortunate to have support offered from Lifelites, who provided technology that helped me take part in my exams. Despite not being able to attend school regularly because of the many obstacles I’ve faced accessing education, I’m really proud to say that I passed most of my exams! I’m so grateful to my support network and everyone who has believed in me along the way.

Sharing My Story with the Goldman Sachs Team

Before the Goldman Sachs team made their final pitch for funding, my mum and I had the opportunity to speak with them about my experiences with Lifelites. I shared how I’ve been able to bake using the switch technology kindly donated by Lifelites to the local hospice I attend. Knowing I also had Eyegaze technology available to support me during my exams, if needed, was so reassuring.

Seeing how inspired the Goldman Sachs team were by my story was really special. They told us that hearing directly from us helped them truly understand the life-changing difference Lifelites makes and that inspiration helped them go on to achieve second place in the pitch for funding, winning nearly £100,000 for the charity. It was such an honour to share my experience and be part of something that will help so many other children like me.

The Impact of Assistive Technology on My Everyday Life

Cupcakes I made using the switch

The impact of this technology has been incredible, it’s allowed me to take part in activities with my siblings, control my mixtures while baking, and bring my own recipes to life!

A Summer Full of Celebrations and Milestones

It’s also been a very busy summer with lots of family weddings, which made the past few months even more special and full of celebration!

Since then, I’ve also celebrated my 18th birthday, which was a big milestone!

In December I am judging a baking competition at a Lifelites fundraising event in London, alongside the one and only Dr Josh from The Great British Bake Off, I can’t wait!

Looking Ahead: My Dreams for the Future

Now that my exams are behind me, I’ve been thinking about what’s next. I’d love to continue my studies and work towards my dream of one day opening my own café, where I can share my passion for baking. I also hope to train as an online counsellor so I can support others who, like me, are living with illness, helping them find joy, confidence, and connection through creativity and technology.

It’s been such a busy and exciting few months, and I can’t wait to share more updates with you all soon!
