Role: Chair of Trustees
Location: 60, Great Queen St, WC2B 5AZ (mostly remote commitment)
Term: 3 years initial term subject to annual re-appointment by Trustees.
Commitment: 2-3 days per month
Purpose of the role
The Chair leads the Board of Trustees to deliver Lifelites’ charitable purposes in accordance with the constitution.
The Chair ensures that the Board functions properly and that Trustees fulfil their duties and responsibilities for effective governance.
About you
You are an experienced, respected strategic and people leader in your field, with the skills, experience and personal qualities, to chair a highly effective board of voluntary trustees. You have a passion for children’s services and strong alignment with Lifelites’ Vision for a world where every child with a life-limiting condition will be able to engage and interact with the people they love and enjoy the world they live in. You are likely to have experience at a senior level and a strong understanding of good governance, financial, legal and operational responsibilities of a Board of Trustees
Key responsibilities
- To lead the Board of Trustees’ to fulfil Lifelites’ Vision, Mission and charitable purposes.
- To lead the process of supporting and appraising the performance of the Chief Executive.
- To work with the Chief Executive and other Trustees to ensure the Board has appropriate induction, training and ongoing support to fulfil its governance functions.
- To consult with Trustees, Chief Executive, and staff to set agendas for Board meetings and run them in accordance with the Constitution.
- To ensure governance matters are dealt with in an orderly and efficient manner.
- To bring impartiality and objectivity to meetings and decision-making.
- To ensure that Lifelites identifies, declares, manages and records conflicts of interest and loyalty.
- To give direction to Board policy-making.
- To monitor that decisions taken at meetings are implemented.
- To ensure Lifelites’ Trustees are fulfilling their duties in risk management.
- To ensure Lifelites fulfils its legal obligations in terms of statutory reporting.
- To oversee periodic governance and performance review.
- To represent Lifelites at functions and meetings, acting as a spokesperson as appropriate.
Person Specification
- Excellent leadership skills.
- Experience of committee work and an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a Board of Trustees.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences.
- Ability to ensure decisions are taken and followed-up.
- Experience of organisational and people management.
