Five years of Eyegaze

Mon 20th Nov 2017

Today marks five years since Lifelites’ first ever Eyegaze donation, so we wanted to take the opportunity to look back over the impact that this incredible technology has had.

Eyegaze uses eye tracking technology to enable children to use a computer with just their eyes. The first one we ever donated was to a children’s hospice in West Yorkshire and since then we have donated around 45 Eyegaze packages, complete with thousands of pounds of software and accessories.

This magical technology can open up a world of possibilities to a child in a hospice, helping them to escape the confines of their condition. It can help them to play a game, paint a picture, or even communicate with their families, maybe for the very first time. In a life where everything is done for them, this is life changing, and just wouldn’t be possible without this technology.

We’ve met plenty of children whose lives have been impacted by Eyegaze, and here are just a couple of them:

Six year old Lois Russell who suffers from severe spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and epilepsy, her mum said: “Lois is a very clever and funny little girl locked in a body that doesn’t do as it is told. You can have a laugh and a joke with Lois and she really listens to everything people say to her. She knows exactly what she wants but she is unable to tell us, which as parents is just heart-breaking. To have the Eyegaze technology available for Lois to use more independently to communicate is a dream come true for us and for her. It takes her a step towards having the voice she deserves.”

Samuel Eyegaze June 2016 3

Seven year old Samuel has cerebral palsy and also loves using the Eyegaze. His mum said: “As much as it makes me sad that he can’t talk, it makes me proud and happy that he can use Eyegaze and achieve something. It also means that Samuel is able to interact with his friends independently which is important for him and us. Do I dream that he will be able to talk tomorrow? Of course I do and I still hope - but it’ll always be difficult for him, so I know this technology is the future for Samuel.”

The hospice staff love it too! Jane from Tŷ Hafan said: “Parents are absolutely blown away when they see what their children are able to achieve with the Eyegaze from Lifelites. It’s incredible to be able to give them that opportunity to unlock their full potential.”
