Sandra Dumitrescu at Ty Hafan Children's Hospice explains the difference the Lifelites' equipment has made to them.
“Here at Ty Hafan, we have benefited from the ‘edutainment’ provision courtesy of the Lifelites project almost since we opened. The value for our children cannot be underestimated. The equipment is utilised on a daily basis whatever the ability of the child, as the system has the relevant components to meet their needs.
“The use extends to the whole family and often parents can be seen surfing the net, alongside their offspring who are playing games – or vice versa! All of the computers are used to the full, in particular the camera and printer; downloading the images and using Paintshop in order to create wonderful pictorial images that are treasured memories for us and the families.
“The added bonuses of wireless technology (mouse) have been a boon for many of our children in particular those with muscular dystrophy. As has the touch screen for our less able children. Many of the children who have limited use of their arms have found the web cam and the games that come with it a great way to have use of the computers – in other words, they are not excluded.
“Having constant access to the Internet has been a boon, from helping with the children’s homework to downloading information on their favourite groups/footballers/film stars. Parents have often used it to research into their child’s condition and gain further information.
“The Lifelites equipment is a valuable part of our resources for the children. For some, it is one of the last things that they can have some form of control over. When we ask the children what activity is their favourite, 9 times out of 10 they say, ‘The computers!’”
“We are very grateful to Lifelites for the provision of a service which is so much valued.”
