The WCIT
Livery companies in London have a long tradition of providing their support for charitable projects, and Company number 100 - The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists - is no exception.  The network model developed by the WCIT for the Royal Chelsea Children's Hospital School was subsequently incorporated into Demelza House, a new children's hospice in Kent. This proved very successful in providing access to IT both to the children staying in the hospice and their siblings and families. The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys then selected this initiative as their millennium project, christening it ‘Lifelites’ and providing the funds to help roll out of the model to every children's hospice in England and Wales at that time.

The Information Technologists have continued to take an active role in Lifelites providing the help and support of their members and advice on the technical developments. This has led to the Lifelites ‘New House Model’ now forming the basis of the schemes which are installed in any new children’s hospice, with upgrades planned for our current sites in the near future.  Now Lifelites have their independence, the Company members are keen to continue their involvement with the project which was born from their efforts.  The WCIT’s Lifelites representative Tim Rangecroft commented, “Lifelites has been on the top of our agenda for many years and we are keen to keep it that way.  We’ve still got lots of ideas about how we can help the charity develop its delivery of technology for children in hospices and we want to be able to use our members’ know-how to help them with that.  We are looking forward to working with them through this exciting stage of their development.”

“A children’s hospice is a place for living and hope; the appropriate use of IT and adaptive technologies can open worlds and new horizons by the inclusion of special needs children into programs of learning and education…” Colin Knight, Master – Worshipful Company of Information Technologists. www.wcit.org.uk

The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys
From the RMTGB Annual Review 2006 - Part of message from Andrew Stebbings, President of the RMTGB
"Lifelites, our millennium project, was established in 1999 when we designated £7.5m to enable all children’s hospice in England and Wales to realise the potential of IT for education and recreational purposes. The expansion of the children’s hospices movement has exceeded our expectations and we are proud that we have now funded this programme in all 38 hospices in England and Wales. This success has led us to establish Lifelites as a separate charity able to seek the Masonic and non-Masonic support that will safeguard its future independently of the Trust. Lifelites is an innovative, emotive and worthwhile cause which is a vital supporter of the successful Children’s Hospice movement."

About Fair Play for Children’s Hospices

There can be few things worse in life than being told that your child will die before you, but for an estimated 20,000 families in the UK this is a reality. Children's hospices provide an essential and free service for thousands of families but these vital support services receive only a small, unpredictable contribution from the government. The simple reality is that unless the government steps in, many children’s hospice services face cut backs and even closure.  To find out more and to add you support to the campaign, please go to http://www.fairplayforchildren.org.uk
